Mark Farris Pirtle, DPT, is a pioneer in integral thinking in stress relief and recovery. He is a clinician, writer, public speaker, filmmaker, and true “innerpreneur.” Synthesizing the disciplines of living systems theory and mindfulness meditation, he developed an evidence-based program for people suffering from stress and stress-related conditions he calls SkillfullyAware.     I have been meditating since the early ‘70’s. Years ago I spent time in India studying and practicing with meditation masters. I took Mark’s Skillfully Aware class and I must say, it enriched my practice. The best part for me was learning a simple language to describe the seemingly indescribable. Strange, but a few new words can make a big difference. Whether you are a beginner or long-time meditator, you’ll learn authentic meditation, but from a guy who understands the science behind it and can teach it in a way that is both simple and deep. If you’re considering taking Skillfully Aware, I highly recommend it.

    “I wanted to openly thank Mark & Lynda for their kindness and help this week! I’ve learned SO much in just days!!! The mediating techniques have been lifesaving as I lean into a new awareness that my trauma is an energy, not a thing I carry with me (like rocks). Mark shared this with me on my 20-min complimentary call. I had immediate relief when I heard that. I am a survivor of trauma, diagnosed with “complex” PTSD. That means I’ve had a lifetime of on-going traumatic events. I am also almost 2 years into remission from alcoholism. I’ve invested a lot of time, money and energy into treatment over the years. While I feel I’ve healed and grown throughout the years, I felt I had lost my tools this year, buried under the traumatic stories I had been attached to.
    Within just mere days of starting module 1, I had a breakthrough I never thought possible.
    When I learned that the trauma is just energy, I found that I was able to view my daily virtue log from a birdseye view. I saw the behaviors for what they are and not who I am. This is a big deal for me as I’ve carried the heaviness of my stories with me, unaware of my behaviors. And even with years of clinical treatment, I still could not feel released from the stories until this week. For the first time, I finally feel a heck-of-a-lot lighter and more able to utilize my tools as well as incorporate the new tools taught in module 1.
    I work for a commercial contractor and this morning we hosted a breakfast for our field crews. I was around 100+ men and before this week, this experience would have triggered the PTSD. I’m a deep thinker and I tend to deeply process EVERYTHING, but today I was the observer of the energy that was in and around me. I detached from the stories of my past traumas when they arose and I made sure to focus on my breathing the moment I felt anxiety. I knew that I had an opportunity to fill in positive behaviors into my virtue log today, so I consciously made an effort to offer supportive and meaningful speech in gentle and kind tones.
    I’ll tell you what, the energy passed through me and I was able to be in the moment not scared and I was smiling and enjoying conversations with all the guys. I did not feel depleted or terrified at the end of the event. Something like this would have paralyzed me for at least a few days, but not today. Today, I genuinely smiled and felt the presence of the other without fear.
    This is a MAJOR milestone for me in my recovery.
    I am so deeply thankful today for what I’ve learned this week and the support I feel from Mark and Lynda. I’m also thankful to Ryan for opening up this opportunity for his followers.”

    Mark, I was so moved by the last class that I was just almost speechless. The way you brought it all together at the end was exquisite. I’ve been doing “A Course in Miracles” since 1981; your work has even enriched that aspect of my life. I have a whole new sense of the world and my place in it.

    When I came to you it was because I heard “the call” in the form of your flier (through the global chant yahoo group.) My purpose was to get help with what I realized had become a sad and negative attitude about my physical condition. I was determined to do what was needed to help myself out of the hole I had dug for myself, but I also sensed that this was the beginning of a new phase in my life and had some excitement about that.

    I had no idea what a beautiful experience it would be. By the time the class was over, my attitude was adjusted and my new purpose was to practice just for the love of the experience. I can’t say that my practice is tidy and completely smooth, but there’s no sense of urgency about it now. In a sense it feels like part of me is already “there” and the rest of me just needs to keep allowing.

    Hi Mark and Lynda, and All Others who may read this,

    I wanted to share an update with you, and maybe provide some encouragement to those working the program. Having taken the in-person TFT class twice in the past year now, I can certainly identify with how patterned my behavior was. I understand in much more depth how the patterns arose out of my own “complex system.” Yet, despite the truth that was obvious to me in your teachings, there was a strange resistance (an anxiety perhaps) associated with meditating and working the Prospective Memory and Book of Virtues exercises. I now understand that much of this resistance had to do with a lack of self-confidence.
    I continue to meditate now nearly daily, often 30 minutes a day. I have been using your Guided meditation program for continued encouragement and guidance, and as a periodic refresher on the material taught in the TFT class.
    Regarding the Prospective Memory Exercise, I have finally found this to start to come more naturally now. I find myself even taking a few moments shortly after a triggering event and creating an Intention for what I’d like to do differently in such an event next time. This is much different than ruminating on my unhealthy reactivity, replaying my negative behavior and thoughts in my mind over and over again, which actually did nothing except ensure I felt crappy about myself and actually led me to repeat the same unhealthy patterns the next time such an event occurred.
    I’m honestly still struggling with discipline on the Book of Virtues, but am again working on integrating it more consistently into my day. I think we all want to be kind. I think that starts with being kind to ourselves.
    It’s now like I can feel my brain and the greater space of my self “healing”, for a lack of a better word…
    For those struggling with discipline, I want to encourage you to keep at it. It likely took a while for unhealthy patterns to develop, and it thus may take a while, but with Intention to change the patterns, coupled with techniques and exercises to enable the change, you can become “unstuck” and feel better !

    To those considering the Tools for Transformation workshop,

    I encourage you to do it!
    Shortly after diving into the SA material, my feelings of helplessness dissipated. To NOT feel helpless is wonderful.

    I have taken the TFT class twice now…
    The material presented is rich… The class will require intention and work on your part to get the most out of it.

    But I can say that my quality of life is much better now. I am making changes in my attitude and behaviors and am on the road to becoming the person I want to be. The Skillfully Aware program has been a big part of this.

    -The Skillfully Aware material and teachings encouraged me to learn about myself and my patterned behaviors…
    -The TFT class also helped me to remember that I am an integral part of the world, and that my actions matter…
    -The material has helped me to develop self-compassion… This is so critical for healing.
    -Meditation is introduced in a very approachable way… It is often difficult to get started… Mark and Lynda, and the TFT workshop community feeling is encouraging and supportive in this regard, and as a result, I now have a daily meditation practice. I feel this is a big part of my newfound health and outlook on life. I now exercise again and take better care of myself. I am more social.

    For those interested in more than vague references, below are some more details of my story, what brought me to the TFT workshop, and a little bit of how the SA workshop has helped me…

    About a year ago, my wife of 20 years asked for a separation and a divorce. We have 2 amazing teenage children. The pain was overwhelming… I would describe myself as a person who has always loved my family… I have many wonderful memories of our marriage and raising our children. But there were certainly struggles, and after several life events and some health challenges, I can say that I am not proud of many of my behaviors, a lot of which had become patterned and essentially automatic reactions to triggers. We went to counseling about five years ago. I understood that I needed to make changes and I can honestly say that I tried… But I found the change extremely difficult and I felt crappy for not being able to make the changes that were needed. I simply did not know how to make changes to behaviors and patterns that were deeply embedded in me and my relationships.

    The Skillfully Aware material and teachings encouraged me and empowered me to learn about myself…

    While I knew that there were struggles and unhappiness in the marriage, what I wasn’t fully aware of was how many of my attitudes and behaviors that caused problems were so learned and self-made over time, and how they were furthermore embedded as patterns in the both the brain AND the body…

    The SA class also helped me to remember that I am an integral part of the world, and that my actions matter…

    Until I understood how these patterns formed, I wasn’t aware how seriously and deeply these patterns of atttitudes and behaviors had affected my spouse, children, and others such as my business partners. While I was loving and supportive and cared about others, I had also developed a series of hurtful behaviors which sometimes activated when triggers would occur: these include reactivity; a tendency to elevate my voice and even yell (picked up in large part from my family of origin); a nasty habit of projection of my anxieties onto others; an inability to leave work at work; a belief that I didn’t have time to play; a desire for perfection; a critical eye – often most critical of myself; feelings of shame and low self esteem. I could go on but you get the idea :).
    And while these patterns and attitudes were being developed, I still loved those I interacted with…In the end the internal conflict of desiring to live in Love yet exhibiting behaviors that are hurtful created a lot of anxiety and discomfort in myself.

    These patterns and attitudes developed were self-reinforced slowly over the course of years, in a way under the radar.

    The Skillfully Aware program has helped me to understand how these patterns developed, and how they were actually being reinforced by myself, and how they are actually physiologically embedded (in the brain and the body).

    But most importantly, the good news that I have taken away from the Skillfully Aware TFT workshop is that the patterns, and their embedding into the brain and body, can change through the use of Tools (a number of powerful ones are presented in the workshop), the development of the intention to change, and help from others.

    We can make changes and new chapters in our stories!

    I purchased the 13 month course last March after hearing Dr. Pirtle give a short talk. I was instantly affected by the method he used and purchased the course right away.

    The positive affect on my life is nothing short of wonderful. I will never be the same…in a very positive way. I am a pilot, and my job specifically is not high stress, but the lifestyle that surrounds it is. It’s my responsibility to myself, my family and everyone else around me to manage stress appropriately and to stay healthy. A meditation practice is a big part of my life for that reason, but I am also very focused on my spiritual path and this work is deepening that pursuit in my life.

    I’m in my 40s now and the last 20+ years of my life I’ve spent pursuing my spiritual path externally. This program has shown me how to focus inside and finally connect with all that that is for me. It’s also helped me to finish the work I needed to do to leave my rough childhood behind me for good.

    One year ago, I had the great pleasure of hearing Dr Pirtle speak at
    Miraval ,which enticed me to take his 6 week Skillfully Aware
    classes. My son and husband also attended these, and each of us
    gained new insights into the power of meditation in managing our
    stressful lives. Since that time I have utilized his 13 month
    meditation program which helps me in my struggle to reclaim peace in
    my life. As an Adult and Geriatric Nurse Practitioner, I have
    recommended meditation to many patients, as it is a critical piece in
    managing stress related illnesses. For many patients, insomnia,
    palpitations, chronic pain, tension headaches and migraines, high
    blood pressure, eating disorders, etc can all be traced back to a
    hyper-aroused state of stress. Many of my friends who have

    I just finished taking Mark’s Skillfully Aware 6 Week Workshop, and feel that it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself. Mark went into great detail teaching about the workings of the human mind and specific exercises in how to become aware of and start to change our own thought patterns and therefore, behavior. He presented an almost overwhelming amount of information in such a scientifically detailed, yet thoroughly entertaining, patient, and compassionate way. We laughed, we cried, but mostly we learned. He is truly a gifted teacher.

    Although I had attempted to meditate for years, I never quite got the hang of it and would give up. Now I look forward to getting “my tush to the cush”, which has been life changing. Although the day to day realities and responsibilities of my life have not changed, my response to them is completely different. This class was a blessing in my life.

    “Ah………Midlife. Divorce, now grown kids, hormones, gravity, all that comes with the learning, and the changing spirit we have. Regardless of the joy, the happiness and positive outlook- within our journey those really annoying little voices tell you otherwise. For me, they were a guide to hurt, and take up space in our own minds to play out many different ways, but never to move forward, just to the side and the same recording over and over. For once, after Mark’s class, I am not at fault, and I can now challenge the voices to new tones, and new scripts, that I choose. Although the neutrons, and physical elements and science was specific and interesting, the more important part to me is to change my behaviors to make positive spins on the old ways.     I am so impressed with my results from Dr. Pirtle’s Skillfully Aware meditation training program. I gained much more than achieving my initial goal, which was to alleviate my nervous system’s severe reaction to surgery that involved pain from moving nerves in my jaw.     I worked with Dr Pirtle at Sierra Tucson, and then purchased the Skillfully Aware program upon leaving. I will admit that at first, I didn’t stick to it consistently. But once I started using it daily, I noticed a huge difference in my ability to be able to recognize when I was fixating and how to shift my awareness away from those subjects.     I have just completed Dr. Mark Pirtle’s Skillfully Aware 6-week course. Drawing on quantum physics and Buddhist mindfulness practices, he clearly and poignantly outlines the processes of the brain/mind and how we get stuck in habitual mental and/or physical pain behaviors. He offers meditation techniques to help us get unstuck and open the way for change. We covered a lot of territory in a short period of time, and I am pleased to have gained valuable tools to assist me on my soulful path. Mark is a superb teacher, compassionate, lively, humorous and candid in sharing his personal experiences on his own journey of consciousness.     In 2013, I attended Mark’s Skillfully Aware course and purchased his guided meditation program. Over the course of a year, and not as fast as I should have, I practiced with the meditations and studied the manual. This program helped me understand what meditation is and why I should be doing it. Before the course I really had no idea. My pre-conceived notions about meditation were just plain wrong. The more I study and recall this material, the more I have a handle on happiness and controlling the stress in my life. When I’m out of practice and forget to call on what I’ve learned from Mark and friends who have completed his course, things get rough and stress creeps in to take over. Now that I see the patterns of good times and hard times, the ebb and flow of happiness, this material has completely reformed my personal theology. It’s all about doing no harm, even with your thoughts, and if you’re capable of it, doing some good — especially with your thoughts. If you want to be adored by your family, your coworkers, and strangers alike, practice goodness, even with your thoughts. This program will get you on the path to doing it.
